Travel Notes: Le Poechenellekelder, Brussels, Belgium – May 2017

Le Poechenellekelder

Before travelling to Belgium last year, I was sure to consult ‘Beer Twitter’ for recommendations on where to go. Of all the recommendations for Brussels beer spots, the one that was most memorable was Le Poechenellekelder, partly because it was recommended by a couple of people in the know, but mainly because it has a crazy long name.

On our third day in Brussels, Dave and I took a stroll across the city and arrived at Le Poechenellekelder at around midday. As tempted as we were to go and see the famous collection of creepy puppets inside, we took a seat outside to make the most of the spring sunshine. After perusing the extensive beer menu for a couple of minutes, I opted for a bottle of Taras Boulba from Brussels’ own, Brasserie de la Senne. Within no time at all, Nadège, surely Europe’s fastest and most efficient waitress, was flawlessly pouring our beers whilst keeping one eye on the next table she’d be serving.

With beer in glass, there was nothing left to do but sit back in our chairs and watch the crowds gathering around Belgium’s most famous urinating toddler, Manneken Pis, whilst Nadège glided from table to table at superhuman speed. Feeling somewhat satisfied with my lot, I opened the food menu with saucisson on my mind.
